Penetration Testing

API Penetration Test

Your APIs answer anyone who sends them a request, not only your apps. An attacker watches the calls your front-end makes, then changes an ID to read another customer's data, adds a field to raise their own privileges or calls endpoints the interface never shows. We test your APIs with the same techniques.

FAQ

API penetration testing: common questions

What clients usually ask us before we test their APIs.

What do you need from us?

The API specification (an OpenAPI or Swagger file, a Postman collection, the GraphQL schema, the WSDL or the .proto files) and at least two test accounts for each role. Sample requests, or access to the web or mobile app that uses the APIs, help us understand the flows. We also ask you to allowlist our IP addresses on the WAF or API gateway of the test environment, so that we test the API itself and not just the filter in front of it.

We have no documentation for our APIs. Can you still test them?

Yes, but coverage then depends on what we manage to discover, and an endpoint nobody tells us about may stay out of the test. That is why even a partial list of endpoints is worth sending.

When you test our web or mobile app, do you test its APIs too?

Yes. Whenever a mobile app or a web front-end talks to a back-end, our test also covers the APIs it uses. A dedicated API test is the right choice when others call those APIs directly as well, such as customers or partners integrating with you, or when there is no front-end at all.

Could the test overload our APIs?

We don't run load tests or denial-of-service attacks, and we check rate limits and resource consumption without overloading the service. If we test in production, we also agree on time windows with you and leave out destructive tests.
